The Sort of Illustrations

The Munchausen-Tales themselves have the character of pictures - everyone seems to make his own visual imagination reading or telling the stories.

The Munchausen-book is one of the most illustrated books of all famous collections of tales.

The most famous situation of the baron:

Both of these facts are represented in the early illustration below (1822): You see the Baron sitting over a bottle of wine having told his stories - in front of two pictures - showing some adventures of himself.

The main bibliography concerning Munchausen in 1969 (E. Wackermann, Münchhausiana, Stuttgart 1969, Eggert) counts about 100 names of illustrators. The catalogue of an exhibition in Zurich in 1996 was able to tell about 130 illustrators, only for children-books. A check-list in 1999 contents about 300 names – today we can imagine that we would reach more than 400.

The Munchausen-Library holds a collection of pictures illustrating the adventure of the horse which was cut in two parts by the portcullis of the town-gate. These 530 pictures prove a very large variety of visualisations concerning the Munchausen tales.

In a noble forest in Russia I met a

fine black fox, whose valuable skin

it would have been a pity to tear by

ball or shot. Reynard stood close to

a tree. In a twinkling I took out my

ball, and placed a good spike-nail in

its room, fired, and hit him so

cleverly that I nailed his brush fast

to the tree. I now went up to him,

took out my hanger, gave him a

cross-cut over the face, laid hold of

my whip, and fairly flogged him out

of his fine skin. (R.E.Raspe, 1786)
